BioChar is a word to describe fine-grained, highly porous charcoal made from biological material (biomass), that is high in organic carbon. This excludes fossil fuel products, geological carbon and industrial synthetics (plastics).
A primary purpose for biochar is as soil enhancement to help
retain nutrients and water, and provides a habitat for the soil food web. This
includes food-producing farm soils, so careful specifications are
needed to define materials suitable for this use.

Caution should be taken when deciding to use BioChar as a soil amendment. A raw biochar could tie up available nutrients in your soil making them immediately unavailable to your plants until the microbial population builds to release them from the biochar.
